Tete province, in the north west of Mozambique, holds an estimated 4.2bn tons of high quality coking coal, the largest undeveloped deposit in the world. As a result of this discovery Tete city, the capital of the province, has enjoyed strong growth over the past few years. Estimates suggest that by 2025 the Tete region will be providing 25% of the world’s coking coal. The development of the coal reserves has seen an influx of foreign expatriate workers into the region.
